Natural Hair for Young Women
Natural Hair is very nostalgic for many black women, as for most of us have not seen, or even touched the texture of our natural curls since we were little girls. This is because for decades we have either worn perms or weaves which have resulted in us being very unfamiliar with our natural hair, as well as at a loss with how to maintain it.
"Natural Hair for Young Women" serves to empower our young women by guiding them through this process of accepting and getting re-acquainted with the natural self. For many black women, this “going natural” is somewhat of a revolution, as it reflects the reversal of the conditioning of our minds, and rejection of mainstream standards of beauty. This often results in a transformative experience, or natural hair journey in order to rediscover and connect with our natural selves, while also educating ourselves about natural hair maintenance and styling in the process.
This journey to natural hair can be as long as one day via the big chop, or up to one year for those of us seeking a gradual transition. However the transformation that many of us experience can continue for years, or can come to a screeching halt for those who unfortunately struggle with accepting what they look like in their natural state. There are many reasons why this may occur which Natural Hair for Young Women will explore, as well as provide solutions for, in order to guide our young women through the challenges of "transitioning" by helping them to re-define themselves, and adopt new standards of beauty that reflect their own image, resulting in a new found freedom, as well as an awareness and acceptance of self!
Therefore while being “natural” may not be a hot topic for many women in other cultures, for black women in America it not only reflects the spiritual, physical and social journey, as well the creative expression of our hair, but it also reflects a small step towards the evolution and independence of our minds. This is true freedom, and that's a big deal!
